'Open Source' is an initiative where like-minded software engineers from across the world donate their time and expertise to developing completely free applications. Because these applications are worked on by many different people, and because their work is completely open for public scrutiny, they are of very high quality. Notable achievements of the Open Source community include Apache, the world's most popular Web server, and Linux, a rival operating system to Windows.

At Kennard Consulting we believe in and contribute to the Open Source community. For small businesses, the advantages are obvious - you get a stable, state-of-the-art foundation for your software for free.

While nobody can give back as much as they gain from Open Source, it is important to contribute where you can. Richard Kennard:
